Application of Photographic Extraction Techniques to Nondestructive Testing of Graphites and Other Materials.

Abstract

Nonedestructive radiographic testing methods were improved and applied for graphites and other materials. After optimizing the radiographic technique, a photographic extraction process was applied to improve the detectability of anomalies. Using this image enhancement technique, the basic visual limitations applying to conventional radiographic analysis were improved. The results of this technique were compared with failure data. A good correlation between predicted and actual failure was attained. The photographic extraction technique is capable of enhancing a radiographic density difference of WD = 0.02. The use of radiographic equipment having micro-focal spots and low KV capability is recommended for the radiography of graphites. (Author, modified-PL).
