Mechanical Structure, Magnet Geometry and Fabrication Techniques for Lightweight Superconducting MHD Magnets.

Abstract

This report considers the mechanical structure, magnet geometry and fabricationtechniques for lightweight superconducting magnets for airbornemagnetohydrodynamic (MHD) GENERATORS. The magnetic forces originating in anoverlapping-circle cross section of a pancake-wound saddle coil are calculatedin detail. The pinch forces are supported by an internal tubular former andthe Lorentz forces by external hoops. End cross-overs are restrained byplates held by tie rods between ends. Glass reinforced epoxy composites areused for the entire mechanical structure. A detailed stress analysis ispresented for the structure for a 6.5 tesla 33 cm winding bore dipole magnet.Fabrication techniques are outlined. Test program results are presented anddiscussed.
