Designs for Rubble-Mound Breakwater Construction, Tsoying Harbor, Taiwan. Hydraulic Model Investigation.

Abstract

Seven series of tests were conducted on 1:47.6- and 1:58.6-scale models of rubble-mound breakwater sections constructed of quarrystone and tetrapod armor units to obtain data from which competitive designs could be developed for construction of a breakwater at Tsoying Harbor. The plan tentatively selected for construction involved a cover layer comprising two layers of pell-mell placed tetrapods, and incorporating berms because of unstable prototype foundation conditions. The model tests of this design showed that: (a) The breakwater head is nearly adequate to withstand the 27-ft prototype design wave. Some damage to the head may be expected from near the crown to the elevation of the lower berm; however, the stability of the head will probably not be endangered. (b) The trunk will withstand the attack of 28-ft waves. (c) The crown elevation is not sufficient to prevent overtopping by the 27-ft design wave, but neither the crown nor the channel side of the trunk would be appreciably damaged by overtopping.
