Evaluation of an Antifreeze Corrosion Test Kit.
Abstract
The object of this study was to evaluate a test kit for field determination of reserve alkalinity of antifreeze solutions. The kit consists of a plastic strip 3-1/4 inch by 1/4 inch with a dry reagent pad 1/4 inch square attached to one end. The reagent pad is chemically impregnated so that it is sensitive to alkalinity. It changes color at various concentrations of buffered alkaline ions. An 8 inch length of rubber tubing is included as an extender to permit testing where coolant level is low in the radiator. The kit was tested in the laboratory with various antifreeze solutions. It was field tested at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Md., USATACOM, Warren, Mich., Post Office Dept., Maintenance Division, Washington, D. C. and Hq, Marine Corps, Washington, D. C. All testing agencies reported satisfactory performance. Adoption of this kit in conjunction with the newly developed antifreeze and battery tester (FSN 6830-105-1418) will provide a means of control so that usage of antifreeze in most government vehicles may be safely extended beyond the presently specified one season.
