Development of Whisker-Reinforced Light Alloys.
Abstract
The objectives of the program were to fabricate and characterize magnesium alloy/alpha-SiC whisker composites and investigate methods for producing titanium/SiC whisker composites. Magnesium alloy composites were consolidated by spark sintering and two different liquid phase hot pressing techniques. Whisker alignment was produced by extrusion of camphene infiltrated green bodies prior to consolidation or by subsequent hot solid state extrusion. Hot pressing with the matrix almost entirely liquid gave AZ31B alloy/alpha-SiC composites with most experiments with titanium and titanium alloy/alpha-SiC whisker composites showed the whiskers to be degraded in each case. A barrier coating of CeS, applied by rf sputtering to SiC in titanium matrices, appeared possibly beneficial. (Author)
