Review of Polarization, Crystal Optics, and Electro-Optic Phenomena.

Abstract

The report gives qualitative descriptions of several interrelated optical phenomena. Mathematical descriptions of various forms of polarized light together with pictorial representations are given. Techniques are described for the production of various polarizations. The field of crystal optics is described in its relation to polarization. Equations for propagation of light wave through media are developed. Relation of propagation direction to wave vector direction are described. Mathematical analysis of double refraction in a uniaxial crystal is made. Electro-optics effects are explained in terms of previously developed concepts. Principles of Kerr and Pockels effects are described. Application to modulation of laser light is briefly discussed. (Author)
