Dewar Design and Vibrational Characteristics for Lightweight Superconducting MHD Magnets.

Abstract

The report contains the design analysis for a lightweight dewar for an airborne magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) generator. A stainless steel inner container, a vapour cooled aluminum radiation shield, superinsulation and an aluminum outer casing are proposed. Coaxial tubular epoxy glass cloth supports are used, connecting flanges on the inner and outer casing ends. The magnet is mounted on the inner container sleeve using adhesive filler between the former and sleeve to prevent relative deflection of the latter. Fibration damping mounts are used but analysis of vibration and shock loads show a calculated 5 g shock limit. Thermal and pressure vessel design calculations are presented. (Author)
