Report on the Management of Logistics Item Data in the Department of Defense.

Abstract

This study was directed to examine in depth the Federal Catalog System Improvement Program and related efforts in terms of joint contribution to increased military effectiveness, optimum economic supply support, and more efficient logistics management. The scope of the Study required a determination of the logistic data requirements in all the functional logistic areas from research and development through disposal. Specific evaluation was required of the need for, and the practicability of, a central logistic data bank, the Federal Item Identification Guides Improvement Program, Management Data Lists, Identification Lists, Master Cross Reference Lists, the proposed Defense Logistics Services Center Integrated Data System, and the Item Entry Control Program.
