Isometric and Isotonic Contraction Time in Relation to Variations in Pharmacologically Induced Frequency,

Abstract

A study on the relationship between tension and ejection time on the one hand and cardiac frequency on the other, conducted on normal subjects on the basis of a particular tachicardizing technique, confirms that of the two phases that compose the cardiac systole, the tension phase is unaffected by variations of frequency, at least in accordance with an acceptable function, while the other, the ejection phase, is strictly related, so that in the evaluation of its normality such a decisive influence cannot be ignored and it will be necessary to resort on every occasion to a 'correlation' of the ejection time ascertained in relation to frequency and to avail oneself of the reported regression functions. To this end, the regression function appears to be most responsive because of the particular forms with which this relationship was studied. Its clinical application of a large scale for the diagnosis and, possibly, prognosis of the behavior of the isotonic contraction phase is possible only if its connection with cardiac frequency under normal conditions is borne in mind.
