Mechanical and Operational Tests of a Russian 'Superoxide' Rebreather.

Abstract

A preliminary evaluation of a Russian Semi-Closed SCUBA suggested that because of the double canister design and small gas bottle, the rig might have been used with superoxide. Further evaluation showed that the rig could function with superoxide in one of the canisters having significantly longer duration with superoxide than without. Further study of the dangers involved in using superoxides in SCUBA apparatus is necessary before their general use could be advocated. The rig uses a single breathing bag with an exhaust valve that relieves at lower bag pressures than the U.S. Navy Semi-Closed Breathing Apparatus. (Author)
