Research and Development of Frequency Doubled CO2 Lasers.

Abstract

A survey of materials suitable for frequency doubling CO2 laser radiation was performed. This survey included the choice of criteria required for second harmonic generation (SHG), selection of candidate materials, determination and evaluation of the relevant parameters, and the selection of tellurium as holding the greatest promise of efficient SHG. Measurements were made to determine the nonlinear coefficient for tellurium, which yielded d sub 11 = Oooo 0016 esu, a value in good agreement with the newly determined value of McFee and Boyd and peak and average power damage thresholds were found.
