Glass Clad Ruby.

Abstract

The objective of this study was to determine the feasibility of fabricating glass clad ruby slabs of high optical quality and good mechanical characteristics for use in axial gradient laser systems. A theoretical examination of the factors involved in cladding ruby with glass was carried out. The solarization resistance of two alumina sealing glasses were measured using a Beckman DK2 recording spectrophotometer. Two 1/2 in. x 6 in. ruby rods were clad with each of these glasses using a modified glass redraw apparatus. Glass properties such as thermal contraction, annealing point and Youngs modulus are discussed and the theory necessary to understand the origin of residual stress in clad ruby disks is reviewed. The properties required for the ideal cladding glass are determined and ways to calculate what these properties are for any hypothetical glass are discussed. A variety of clad ruby disk samples were made which had different average stress values ranging from 300 psi tension to 200-300 psi compression. No stress induced lensing in the ruby core was observed in any of the clad samples. (Author)
