Pennsylvania-Princeton Army Avionics Research Program. Millimeter Wave Image Conversion Task. Mathematical Analysis and Evaluation of Millimeter Wave Image Conversion Systems.

Abstract

The mathematical description of a millimeter wave image convertor is formulated. The converted image is described as either a spatial intensity distribution f2(x, y) or a spatial frequency distribution F2(f sub x, f sub y), where f2(x, y) and F2(f sub x, f sub y) comprise a Fourier transform pair. An image evaluation criterion, expressed as a fidelity factor phi, is defined in terms of f2(x, y) or F2(f sub x, f sub y). A knowledge of this factor for a given conversion system permits a description of the quality of the converted image. A realistic conversion system is postulated and analyzed to illustrate the application of the image evaluation criterion and the calculation of phi. A physical interpretation of phi is offered.
