Synthesis and Evaluation of Curing Agents.

Abstract

Curing agents for both carboxy- and hydroxy-functional prepolymers have been investigated. A series of new di- and trifunctional aziridines based on cis- and trans-2,3-dimethylaziridine have been synthesized and evaluated. These include N-acyl, N-carbamyl, N-sulfonyl, and perfluorobenzene aziridines. Reactivity was found to decrease in the following order: N-carbamyl > N-acyl > perfluorobenzene > N-sulfonyl-aziridines. Sulfonyl and perfluorobenzene aziridines require catalysts having higher catalytic activity than Zr(AA)4. N-carbamyl and N-acyl 2,3-dimethylaziridines were evaluated in CTPB propellants. Considering relative stability, stoichiometry and reaction rate, it was concluded that the trimesoyl (trans-2,3-dimethyl aziridine)3/isophthaloyl(trans-2,3-dimethyl aziridine)2 is the best combination of tri- and diaziridines for CTPB propellant use of those synthesized and tested on this program. Two pure triisocyanates have been isolated from commercial sources and evaluated in gumstocks and propellants. (Author)
