The Evaluation of Animal Species for the Production of Aseptic Bone Necrosis.

Abstract

The technical report covers a literature survey on the vascular anatomy to the femoral head in man and animals. In addition, it describes a study of the vascular anatomy to the femoral head in particular animal species, in order to select a model most suitable for the production of aseptic bone necrosis from exposure to compression/decompression stress. To this end, the arterial supply of the femoral head in sheep, goats and pigs was examined. These animals were chosen because they represented total body mass similar to what is found in man, a criterion important in predicting decompression risks. Other animals such as the large simian primate, although they anatomically represent man, are difficult to use experimentally when they attain the size of an adult man. For this reason only these three species were evaluated.
