The Effects of Gravity and Acceleration on the Lung

Abstract

This monograph, written by D. H. Glaister, a member of the UK Institute of Aviation Medicine, provides a description of the mechanics, of the lungs under gravitational and accelerative stresses. The effects upon the cardiovascular system and upon the performance of the lungs, together with the consequential effects are discussed in detail. Some information is provided on the method of increasing tolerance to acceleration. The volume provides a very readable and comprehensive account of the effects of acceleration on a part of the circulatory system often overlooked - probably because of the more immediate and well-known cerebrovascular effects. An excellent bibliography and index is included.
