Energization and Protection Considerations for Lightweight Superconducting MHD Magnets.

Abstract

The report considers protection and energisation requirements for lightweight superconducting magnets for airborne magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) generators. Possible energisation systems are reviewed. A theoretical treatment of the thermal and electrical transients occurring after a persistent mode quench is derived and calculations to determine the number of shunts required in a particular case are presented.
