Precision Solid State Film Transport.

Abstract

A Solid State Film Transport using piezoelectric motion has been evaluated and found to have definite potential in film positioning applications. The concept is particularly useful in flight equipment where torque motors in conventional transport mechanisms are frequently difficult to apply. The imagery built up from a succession of evenly spaced scan lines often requires line placement accuracies of the order of one (1) micrometer. Piezoelectric ceramics change shape in a highly predictable way when excited by an electric field. This change in size can be exploited to move film or a film carrier at precise rates, steps or velocities. Two basic elements are required: a clutch element and a drive element. The former causes the latter (the drive) to contact the film or film carrier and then as the driver is excited its expansion moves the film. A model utilizing 5-inch film has been designed, tested and evaluated. The basic capability of piezoceramics to move film has been demonstrated. (Author)
