Free-Fall Sensor.

Abstract

The purpose of the free-fall sensor program was to design and develop a free-fall sensor system and to fabricate and test a limited number of sensors to demonstrate the feasibility of the concept. Phase I of the two-phase effort encompassed the design and development effort followed by Air Force drop tests which demonstrated the feasibility of the design and concept. The follow on Phase II effort involved (1) the redesign of the Phase I sensor to improve performance and the exposure of the redesigned sensor to vibrational tests, and (2) the design and fabrication of an instrumentation system consisting of flight instrumentation units and a playback test set to monitor and check performance of the free-fall sensors during a test bomb drop. Air Force tests demonstrated the improved performance obtained with the Phase II design. (Author)
