Ambient Temperature Binder Cure Catalysts for Hydroxy Terminated Systems.

Abstract

The report describes catalyst systems designed to cure R-45M and Li-hydroxy terminated polybutadiene (HTPB) propellants at ambient temperature while providing a satisfactory potlife. The best cures are obtained with a combination of Fe(AA)3/HAA + acid/Zn0. A medium strong organic acid such as mandelic or benzilic acid appears to give the best results. The acid is consumed faster than HAA, therefore, restoring the catalytic activity more quickly than would be possible with an equivalent quantity of HAA. An excellent catalyst system was found for R-45M propellant cured with HDI5 It consists of Zn0 and preferably linoleic acid. The catalyst zinc linoleate is formed during cure. This system is, however, not applicable to other prepolymers, notably Li-HTPB's. Aging studies of Li-NTPB and R-45M propellants showed that satisfactory stability is obtainable with the Li-HTPB's. In R-45M propellants slow hardening occurs at elevated temperatures which cannot be attributed to post-cure. (Author)
