Helmet Mounted Display/Sight System Study

Abstract

The report describes a study effort to determine the applicability of a helmet mounted sight/display system with emphasis on applications to the high performance F-15 aircraft. The missions of that aircraft were analyzed to determine pilot functions where such helmet mounted systems could be used to advantage. Alternative approaches to the problem of helmet angle pick-off were evaluated in order to select the most suitable angle measuring techniques. An evaluation of selected helmet mounted display characteristics was carried out both in the laboratory and in flight test. Results from these studies led to recommendations concerning future experimental programs. A preliminary design of a combined helmet sight/display device was based on the findings of the analytical and experimental investigations.
