A Rolling Fatigue Tester - Its Kinematic and Elastohydrodynamic Relationships.

Abstract

The report describes a bench-type rolling fatigue tester of considerable versatility and ease of variable control, but also of simple construction and modest cost, such that it appears to be well suited to multiple-rig rolling fatigue investigations. One of the features of this tester is that it can readily accept either four balls or three balls and a cone as the test specimens. General expressions for motons, normal loads and compressive stresses, as well as central-region elastohydrodynamic lubricant film thicknesses are derived for both the 4-ball and the 3-ball/cone test specimen configurations. These are then applied to some specific examples to obtain numerical solutions. (Author)
