An Analysis of Subterranean Storage Bunkers Subject to Adverse Arctic Temperature Cycles.

Abstract

The report summarizes the results of an in-house study conducted to determine the minimum expected temperature that could be experienced in an unheated subterranean storage bunker under adverse arctic conditions. The subject bunkers were typical of those in use for storage of operational rocket motors and air-launched missiles. A theoretical one-dimensional analysis is used with certain assumptions that make the results conservative. Theoretical predictions are shown to agree with experimentally obtained bunker temperatures at Elmendorf AFB, Alaska. (Author)
