A Study of the Ecology and Epizoology of the Native Fauna of the Great Salt Lake Desert, 1964.

Abstract

An extensive ecological and epizoological survey of endemic diseases was conducted in the Great Salt Lake Desert region. Native mammals, birds, and livestock were tested for Rocky Mountain spotted fever, Q fever, Tularemia, Brucella, Psittacosis, and Bedsonia group of organisms. Susceptibility, transmission and immunity studies were carried out with several animal species, and ectoparasite vector transmission experiments were conducted. An ecological study in connection with the zoonoses of the area was carried out with special emphasis on lagomorph and rodent population dynamics. In association with the rodent ecology studies, a control project employing the insecticidal and pesticidal compound, Endrin, was conducted. (Author)
