Investigation of the Influence of Hook Abrasion and Wire Materials on the Useful Service Life of Deck Pendants.

Abstract

The effect of deck pendant damage due to arresting-hook abrasion on various wire materials was investigated during this project. The arresting hook-deck pendant interface was studied to determine contact loads, geometrical relationships, relative velocities, and surface properties. An abrasion test machine was designed and constructed to simulate the abrasion phenomenon. This machine allowed single wires to be abraded under laboratory conditions to determine their resistance to the abrasion and subsequent formation of martensite. Seven different wire materials were subjected to multiple abrasion hits. The results of these experiments verified that the abrasion test machine produced martensite on the outer surface of extra-improved plow-steel wires similar to that found in actual deck-pendant wires. An overall review of the results of the abrasion tests and subsequent evaluations indicates that several wire materials show promise for use in the deck-pendant application. (Author)
