AHP Cylinder Fabrication - LTV Carbon-Carbon Composite.

Abstract

Two 9 inch diameter, 15 inch long cylinders with a 1/2 inch wall were fabricated.Based on the results of the preceding carbon- arbon investigation, the R-120phenolic, WCA GRAPHITE CLOTH SYSTEM WITH FOUR FURFURYL ALCOHOL IMPREGNATIONS ANDREPYROLYZATION STEPS WAS USED. Flat panels were processed with the cylindersand characterized by mechanical and physical testing. These cylinders exhibitedimproved mechanical properties compared to those of the 6 inch diametercylinders fabricated in the preceding carbon-carbon investigation. One cylinderand test specimen, machined from the second cylinder, were forwarded to theAir Force for testing in the joint SAMSO/AFML/ FWL/Aerospace screening taskof the SAMSO Advanced Heatshield Program (AHP).
