Modification of Radio Set AN/VRC-46 R/T-524 to Eliminate Blower Noise.

Abstract

The receive-transmit radio set AN/VRC-46 R/T-524 is currently employed in an operational environment which dictates that noise generated by the unit's blower be eliminated. Results of an engineering analysis of the radio set showed that the unit can be operated continuously in receive and low-power transmit modes without the blower. In the high-power transmit mode, however, the transmit duty cycle must be severely restricted to prevent destruction of transistors due to excessive heat. The report: (1) establishes high-power transmit duty cycle limits with the blower disabled; (2) provides instructions for installation of a blower 'ON-OFF' switch, which can be accomplished in the field; (3) suggests radio set design changes for a more permanent solution to the heat problem; and (4) presents temperature testing results.
