USAF Limited Flying Qualities Evaluation of an F-4E with Fixed Leading Edge Slats.

Abstract

A limited series of stability tests were conducted by a USAF team on an F-4E equipped with fixed wing leading edge slats and an over-balanced longitudinal control system. The purpose was to evaluate the status of longitudinal stability deficiencies reported during an earlier F-4 slat evaluation. The deficiencies were found to be corrected to the extent that the Agile Eagle II configuration is now satisfactory for the mission of the F-4E. Development of the movable slats configuration should be continued. Further investigation of stall warnings and stall characteristics should be accomplished by USAF with the mechanized slats configuration.
