Annual Diameter Growth of Conifers Adjacent to Eglin Reservation Test Area C-52A as Related to the Testing of Defoliant Spray Equipment.

Abstract

The annual diameter growth of 18 sand pines (Pinus clausa) and two longleaf pines (P. palustris) was measured to determine if tree growth was affected by defoliant drift from tests performed at Eglin Air ORCE Base, Florida, between 1962 through 1969. A comparison of the annual diameter growth during the years of defoliant testing with the diameter growth before testing showed that growth of some trees had increased and some had decreased. Control trees, 4.6 to 20 miles from the test site also had similar diameter growth fluctuations. No relationships were evident between the amount of annual defoliant dissemination and the annual diameter growth. Likewise, no relationship was found between the occurrence of false growth rings and the testing of defoliant spray equipment. (Author)
