Grain Integrity Evaluation of the Thiokol TE-M-521 Solid Motor.

Abstract

A finite element elastic grain analysis, combined with a viscoelastic analysis of the Thiokol TE-M-521 motor, was performed. Based on mean uniaxial allowables which in part were estimated, a 29-month-old motor when tested at 70F had a positive 45-percent margin. However, the uncertainties associated with extrapolated low strain rate allowables, accelerated chemical aging degradations, and properties predict a failure. The damage incurred by a new mean motor when cooled to 0F and tested is also determined. Assuming a 25-percent degradation in the uniaxial thermal strain allowables due to biaxial degradation, a mean motor when tested at 0F is predicted to crack in the bore. The available aged flight motors are probably not flightworthy. (Author)
