Bullet Impact Sensitivity Tests for N-Propyl Nitrate.

Abstract

Tests were conducted to determine the effects of bullet impact on n-propyl nitrate. Seven types of ammunition were used: 30 caliber ball, 50 caliber ball, 20-mm ball, 20-mm armor-piercing incendiary, 20-mm high-explosive incendiary, 7162-mm tracer, and a 20-mm flechette. The testing was accomplished in two phases. Phase I consisted of testing with the n-propyl nitrate contained in four-and six-quart thin-walled aluminum canisters. Phase II used four BLU-10/B fire bomb casings (33-1/2 gallon capacity). The review of high speed film (2000 and 4000 frames per second) indicated there were no detonations; however, the 20-mm high-explosive incendiary rounds initiated burns. (Author)
