Digital Integrating Goniometric Ionospheric Sounder Digisonde 128.

Abstract

Because of the complexity and extreme variability of the ionosphere, extensive measurements and evaluation of long time series of many geophysical parameters are necessary for the understanding of dynamic effects. Much data analysis and classification must precede attempts to explain trends and variations. Gathering the multi-dimensional information requires sophisticated, reliable measuring instruments and systems. In ionospheric physics these tools must be designed and fabricated by researchers. With the exception of the tape recorder and the printer there are no moving parts in the system; thus the complete solid state configuration insures extreme reliability in spite of including complicated data integration and formatting features in addition to the three program selection of many measurement parameters. Sometimes ionosondes have to operate remotely, therefore monitoring of the system via telephone lines has been integrated in the system. The sounder has been prepared to accept feedback from a local on-line computer.
