Two-Stage Vuilleumier Cycle Cryogenic Refrigeration System for Advanced Forward Looking Infrared (AFLIR) Applications.

Abstract

The report describes the development of a Vuilleumier (VM) cycle, cryogenic refrigeration system for forward looking infrared (FLIR) type systems. The refrigerator that was designed and fabricated is a liquid cooled, two-stage machine composed of the refrigerator, a power inverter, a solid state electronic temperature controller, and an auxiliary cooling supply. The refrigerator was qualified for flight safety by passing explosion, vibration, and shock tests. The document also contains an applications analysis in which are described the advantages and disadvantages of applying VM cycle, two-stage coolers to airborne systems. (Author)
