Vuilleumier Cycle Cryogenic Refrigeration System for Infrared Scanner Applications.

Abstract

The report describes the accomplishments on the development of an air cooled Vuilleumier (VM) cycle, cryogenic refrigeration system for cooling an advanced low altitude infrared scanner system. The refrigeration system consists of the refrigerator and a control module. The refrigerator was qualified for flight safety by passing explosion, vibration, and shock tests and temperature-altitude tests. This report also contains an applications analysis describing the advantages and disadvantages of employing VM cycle refrigerators as spot coolers for airborne systems. It supplies graphical data that a designer can use to predict the size, weight, and power consumption of single-stage VM refrigerators for different load temperatures, refrigeration capacities, cooldown characteristics, and environmental conditions.
