Air Bubbler for Bridge Pier Protection.

Abstract

The objective of the report was to document test results of a pneumatic system designed to protect bridge piers in Vietnam. Underwater saboteurs were to be intercepted and forced to the surface by the hydrodynamic forces created by a curtain of rising air bubbles. The final test of this pneumatic system took place in Port Hueneme Harbor in September 1969. The test results did not support the pneumatic system as a satisfactory bridge pier protective device. The hydrodynamic drag forces induced by the test pneumatic system were not sufficient to overcome swimmer capabilities exemplified during these tests by determined Navy divers. (Author)
