Photoemission and Optical Studies of Amorphous Germanium,

Abstract

An optical density of states has been determined for amorphous germanium (Ge) by a combination of photoemission and optical measurements. This density of states does not correspond to theoretical models that predict tails of localized levels in the forbidden gap and mobility edges separating bands of extended states. The absorption edge is as sharp as crystalline Ge. However, certain features of the crystalline density of states that relate to the long-range order (Brillouin-zone effects as evidenced by critical point structure) are completely absent in the amorphous phase.
