Nosetip Design Analysis and Test Program (NDAT). Volume I. Part II. Code Improvements and Sensitivity Studies.

Abstract

A study was performed to provide a comprehensive design analysis computer program for use in prediction of nosetip response in normal reentry environments. Comprehensive computer codes were developed for graphite, silica-reinforced, and charring ablator materials. These codes are coupled to include aerodynamic, aerothermal, and structural response over a complete reentry trajectory. In addition to code development, studies were performed to improve several elements of the continuum analysis model and to include modeling of melting ablation of silica-reinforced materials. Sensitivity studies were performed and the criticality of input data was assessed. (Author)
