Studies of the Iridium(III) and (IV)-Chloride System in Acid Solution.

Abstract

A spectrophotometric and ion-exchange study of the iridium(III) and (IV)-chloride system in acid solution has been carried out. Evidence as to the nature of the purple and blue iridium(IV) species formed under certain conditions, and their relationships to the known chloro complexes, has been obtained. Effects of pH, chloride concentration and aging on interconversions of the various species have been studied. A study of the spontaneous reduction of hexachloroiridate(IV) to the +3 state in aqueous solution has shown that the reduction is due to reaction of IrCl6(2-) with water to liberate hydrogen.
