A Weather Model for Microwave Radiometry.

Abstract

A high-flying craft engaged in ocean surveillance will look through most of the atmosphere, which may obscure the target by attenuating the incoming radiation or emitting radiation of its own. Therefore, in designing a sensor for such a surveillance craft, it is desirable to have a model of the atmosphere so that the mission planner knows what conditions to allow for. Assuming that there is a requirement that the system be capable of detecting a potential target 80% of the time, and to give the mission planner and the design engineer limiting conditions under which the sensor should still function properly, a model atmosphere has been defined. It takes into consideration those weather conditions which occur 20% or more of the time. Phenomena whose probabilities of occurrence fall below this 20% threshold - monsoon rains, for example - need not be considered, since they will not occur often enough. (Author)
