Investigation of Graphite Filament Reinforced Plastic Composites.

Abstract

It was determined that the incorporation of thin 1 mil webs of graphite filaments between and transverse to the normal 5-9 mil thick plies of graphite filaments could produce substantial increases in transverse tensile strength without affecting other directional properties or producing significant weight penalties. These same modifications produced even more significant increases in the impact damage resistance of the graphite filament composites. Mechanical property test data for short term exposures at 350 F were determined for two types of epoxy matrix composites and a polyimide matrix composite. (Author, modified-PL)
