Long Life Hardened Lithium Doped Silicon Solar Cell Investigation.

Abstract

The report describes research to develop an advanced hardened lithium doped solar cell. Design of the cell structure is detailed. Use of barriers at cell surfaces to reduce loss of lithium combined with ion implantation to introduce lithium into the cell is anticipated to allow optimization of cell stability and recovery characteristics. Study was made of the mechanisms responsible for depletion of active lithium in the solar cell. Electron and neutron irradiation studies was performed to provide data necessary to selection of lithium concentrations necessary to accomplish performance objectives. Vulnerability studies were performed to establish overall cell and cell module hardness against a nuclear weapon environment. (Author)
