The Frequency of VEE Virus in the Pharyngeal Material of Clinical Cases of Encephalitis,
Abstract
The paper contains a study of samples obtained from pharyngeal swabs and of accompanying blood samples of clinical cases of encephalitis (1963). The results of the study are the following: The EEV virus was found in the throat of nine of the patients studied; The virus was encountered in the pharyngeal material of only those patients who also exhibited virus in the blood, i.e. a percentage of 11.30%; In the 65 clinical cases where no virus was isolated in the blood, there was also no virus in the pharyngeal exudate; In the crowed ecological conditions prevailing in the Venezuelan rural areas, the presence of the Venezuelan ecephalitis virus in the throat of clinical cases leads us to assume that it might play a part as another factor in inter-human contamination with this disease.
