Arthropod Borne Virus Encephalitis,

Abstract

It was not until approximately 25 years ago that proof was obtained that a group of encephalitic disorders were caused by viruses. These viruses have recently been designated as Arbor viruses (Hammon and Reeves, 1945) in view of their being arthropod borne. The term is derived from the AR of arthropod and BOR of borne, which is the manner in which Hammon, Reeves and Gray classified them in 1943. Two major categories stand out in this vast group, namely yellow fever and the whole series of virus encephalitis. Venezuelan encephalitis, in particular, is discussed in the report. Evidence which will identify an isolated strain as being that of the Venezuelan type is presented and, in addition, the presence of antibodies against that strain in a person who was a victim of encephalitis in the course of an equine epizooty is demonstrated.
