Redesign and Retrofit of Film Transport for HiRec Electron Beam Recorder.

Abstract

The significance to the Air Force of this research and development is that it will now make it possible to record the RCA return beam vidicon camera on the IBM built recorder without banding and spurious degradation due to transport inaccuracies. Under the contract, the Systems Development Division of IBM designed, developed, and delivered a pictorial electron beam recorder to the Optronics Branch of the Air Force Avionics Laboratory. The imagery produced by this machine was found to be unacceptable for the contemplated application; the film transport was presumed to be the principal cause. Ampex modified this film transport, adding a phase-lock capstan servo system and servoed, constant force, tension arm/reel drive assemblies. The imagery produced by the modified transport was found to be markedly improved and well within the proposed performance specifications, but minor noise problems will remain. This noise is associated with ground loops and other problems in the electron beam gun assembly. (Author)
