A Robust Detection Scheme for the Detection of Signals in Noise over a Wide Class of Noise Statistics.

Abstract

In 'IR Signal Processing Methods,' by Rees, a nonparametric detection scheme was described using the idea of Rank Statistics. This note describes experimental results obtained using the scheme and adaptations made to produce a more satsifactory system. Results of the system after modification are also presented. The system consists of two detectors each looking at a slightly different, but adjacent, fields of view. When the signal occurs it will occur in one or other of the channels. The assumption is made that it cannot occur simultaneously in both channels, however, when it does occur it doesn't matter which channel contains the signal. The signal processing operates on data collected from both channels and attempts to identify when a signal has occurred.
