50-Man Shipboard Wastewater Treatment System.

Abstract

This report describes the research and development phase for a shipboard operational prototype of an advanced 50-Man Waste Treatment System. A laboratory model was developed of a rapid treatment system compatible with shipboard requirements. The system has demonstrated the feasibility of yielding an effluent that meets and is below the specifications of 50 mg/l suspended solids, 50 mg/l of biochemical oxygen demand and 240/100 ml of coliform count. Development and evaluation has been made of the proposed application of a unique centrifugal filter wheel in conjunction with an electrically fired fluid bed incinerator and final tertiary treatment techniques. The nature and quantity of ship's wastes were reviewed to determine the characteristics of the material to be treated. A representative influent mix of galley, scullery, shower, lavatory, and below deck drains was developed and applied throughout the development test program. Application is made of a quick-action flocculent that alters the nature of the waste stream to convert sub-5 micron particles, which contribute a significant portion of the BOD, to a form treatable by the system's components. A study of tertiary treatment methods in conjunction with feasibility testing has yielded the selection of either of two techniques: carbon adsorption and ozonation.
