On the Boundaries of Oceans and Their Adjacent Seas (Ueber Grenzen der Ozeane und ihrer Nebenmeere),

Abstract

The delimitation of oceans and seas can proceed from various aspects according to the use intended. To do this, characteristic oceanographic, biological or meteorological factors may be cited. For ocean and sea boundaries from the nautical-scientific aspects of breakdown and nomenclature, the morphological configuration of the sea bottom is taken into consideration. The article provides a historical survey of the essential stages of the subdivision of the global sea and explains the breakdown, boundaries and names on the world chart 'Names and Nautical Boundaries of the Oceans and Seas' (1969) published by the Seehydrographischer Dienst der DDR. On this chart are portrayed four oceans with 128 secondary seas. (Author)
