Production of Complex Sections with Convex Draw Dies.

Abstract

Aluminum alloy 6063, AISI 4340 steel, and 6Al-4V titanium Z-shapes were used for drawing studies. These studies show that the convex dies produce definite lateral flow of metal in the Z-sections and have the capability of reducing thickness variations to less than 5% while markedly improving the surface finish. The thickness of titanium Z-shapes was reduced from 0.285-inch to 0.115-inch by drawing at temperatures in the range of 800 to 1200F using combination 60 - 90-deg. convex dies. (Author)
