An Investigation of Parameters for Optimizing Sensitivity in Strain Measurements Using Metallic Strain Gages over Long Lines.

Abstract

The measurement of transient strain, using metallic bondable and weldable strain gages in a Wheatstone bridge, is required to help determine structural response in high-explosive, nuclear-simulation field tests. However, because the strain gage is normally at some distance from its associated conditioning and recording equipment, the problem of differentiating a few millivolts of signal from sometimes prohibitive noise levels is very often present. Therefore, it is important for designers of strain measurement systems to become aware and knowledgeable of methods that will maximize the output signal level from a strain channel by proper selection of strain gages and the Wheatstone bridge configuration in which they are used. By applying these methods to increase the signal-to-noise ratio, valid strain data may be obtained from what could often become a useless channel. (Author)
