Spectral Characteristics of Far Infrared Lasers For Use in Surveillance and Communications Systems.

Abstract

A variable gas laser was developed for analyzing resonant spectra in the range of 10-500 micrometers using laser resonator interferometry (LRI). The scanning far infrared laser was calibrated with a Michelson interferometer and an He-Ne laser at 633 nm. Resonant spectra of CO2, H2O, and HCN were produced and analyzed in separate operations. The theoretical conditions for resonance are examined for application of LRI to scanning laser resonators. A new quantity called the index of resonance is defined and introduced to describe the mode content in different classes of laser resonators. LRI is compared with previous methods for measuring absolute frequencies and wavelengths. (Author)
